Community Art in Action

"With a daughter in elementary school, I like to find ways to encourage children to think about their creative talents to help the world. In September 2018 I went to my daughter’s fourth grade classroom to teach a lesson about how their unique abilities can help their community. Each student wrote down their unique contribution on a feather and decorated it with tissue paper. I then used over 300 feathers from all of the fourth grade students in the school to make giant wings to “make them fly”. This is a common mural in downtown Nashville, so everyone is familiar with a selfie being taken in front one just like it. I made a selfie station in the main hallway for all the kids and staff to imagine them lifting up their community by their own contributions.”
